Giving Tree Keeps on Giving

Tis’ the season for giving…especially at the Eric Ryan Corporation!

On Thursday December 15th, 90 beautifully wrapped presents were delivered to Holy Redeemer Social Services in Ellwood City, PA.  Eric Ryan employees also offered generous monetary and food donations to support local children and families.

A “giving tree” adorned with stars was assembled in the lobby of Eric Ryan Corporation in the beginning of December.  Each star included information on what to buy for a child who is less fortunate and will not be receiving presents this year.

Leslie Geertgens, Senior Auditor/Team Leader, always takes 2 stars from the tree.  Geertgens gives these stars to her daughters so that they also learn how powerful of an impact giving to others can be.

Tiffannie Widmaier, Telecom Account Manager, also took a few stars from the tree and is thankful for the lesson it brings.  “Every child deserves something during the holiday season.  It shows them that people care about them no matter what the circumstance may be.  It’s also important to show my children how good it feels to give something to others without expecting something in return.”

Obama Backs Energy Efficiency Initiative

On Friday, President Obama and former President Bill Clinton joined together to announce $4 billion in government and private sector energy upgrades to buildings within the next 2 years.

These investments will save billions in energy costs, promote energy independence, and is estimated to create tens of thousands of jobs.

“Upgrading the energy efficiency of America’s buildings is one of the fastest, easiest, and cheapest ways to save money, cut down on harmful pollution, and create good jobs right now.  But we can’t wait for Congress to act.  So today, I’m directing all federal agencies to make at least $2 billion worth of energy efficiency upgrades over the next 2 years – at no up-front cost to the taxpayer.  Coupled with today’s extraordinary private sector commitments of $2 billion to upgrade businesses, factories, and military housing, America is taking another big step towards the competitive, clean energy economy it will take to win the future,” said President Obama.

No taxpayer money or government risk is involved with this initiative and is projected to save the property owner $200,000 a year in utility bills.

Solar Energy Project Expands in U.S. Military

On Wednesday, Bank of America’s Merrill Lynch division and SolarCity announced that they have agreed on financing terms for a $1 billion solar energy project.  The project targets the U.S. military and will be used to add an estimated 371 megawatts of solar panels on as many as 160,000 military housing units at bases across the nation.

The 5 year plan, called “SolarStrong” is billed as potentially the largest residential solar project in U.S. history. SolarStrong involves a less costly debt lending – solely from Merrill.

“Equity alone I don’t believe can handle the massive growth potential in the distributed solar space — adding debt to the mix is important,” said Jonathan Plowe, head of new energy and infrastructure solutions at Merrill. “We now have a business model that works without a government guarantee … a year ago it wasn’t possible to do that, there weren’t financing tools available.”

SolarStrong is partnering with private military housing developers who would own and operate the rooftop solar installations – providing electricity at a lower rate.

Desk Phones to Dust

Phone Go To DustCompanies are quickly shifting away from regular desk phones and moving to mobile communications more quickly than expected.

“Decision makers” in the IT world have predicted that mobile phones will replace desk phones within the next two years.  82% of enterprises currently have employees using mobile applications for communication.

Many enterprises believe their mobile network operator is better positioned to deliver voicemail, instant messaging, video calling, email integration, extension dialing, and video conferencing – rather than using regular land lines.

A recent survey revealed that mobile network operators have a compelling window of opportunity to be the preferred provider of choice when it comes to delivering mobile communications that keep employees connected via video, instant messaging, and web conferencing.

Here are more fun facts from FierceWireless.com on how companies are quickly moving to wireless devices:

  • 44% of enterprises surveyed have at least one-quarter of their workforce operating solely using a mobile phone, and 82% of enterprises have employees using mobile apps for communications and collaboration.
  • Already, 30% of enterprises support tablets, 51% support BlackBerry devices, 40% support iPhones and 31% support Android phones.
  • 62% of IT leaders are expanding their enterprise’s unified communications capabilities, while instant messaging, web collaboration and videoconferencing were identified as the top UC services they are looking to support on mobile devices over the next three years.
  • 72% of IT decision makers in the U.S. are looking to deploy videoconferencing across their organization in the next year, compared to 56% in the UK.

Frontier – Reselling AT&T Wireless

The two companies stated that the 3 year deal will run hand-in-hand with Frontier’s current broadband, voice and satellite TV service.  The new agreement will begin a trial period in the beginning of 2012 and then fully expand through Frontier’s footprint – covering 27 states.

“This was a natural extension of a product that we are not currently offering that would fit well with our product suite,” Steve Crosby, Frontier’s senior vice president of government affairs and public relations, stated.  He said the deal would allow Frontier to leverage AT&T’s wireless resources and will allow AT&T to attract customers they may not already have.

An AT&T spokesperson said that Frontier will sell AT&T branded products and services and claimed that Frontier is a great service provider with a strong record of providing bundled services.

Adding wireless service to the current Frontier bundle pack will enhance the appeal to current and future customers.

Eric Ryan wants to know…does the bundle pack make this wireless service more appealing?  Please leave any feedback below.

Gettin’ Crafty Before the Holiday

Eric Ryan Corporation is currently gearing up for its second annual craft show!  That’s right! Eric Ryan Corporation has invited its employees to showcase their talents and skills next Wednesday, November 23rd.

Emloyees had the opportunity to purchase a ”booth” to set up their assorted crafts.  All proceeds from the crafters entry fees will be donated to a local charity.  ERC employees are then free to shop around and purchase some unique items!

This year, there are 10 crafters selling the following:

  • Vinyl gift items and home decor applications
  • Glass block holiday lights
  • Gourmet apples, pretzels, and marshmallow pops
  • Cookies
  • Candy
  • Candles
  • Lighted hand paint wine bottles
  • Mary Kay gift sets
  • Jewelry

Executive Assistant, Sharon Sudano appreciates the opportunity given to her at ERC.  Sharon makes all natural wax candles, which include hand-poured container and molded candles.  She started experimenting with the all-natural waxes and wicks approximately 6 years ago and has since been addicted to it.  “I like the challenge of mixing the dyes to come up with the color I need, trying out the newer waxes and experimenting with different fragrances,” says Sudano.  “There are a lot of factors involved as to the end result of each candle.”

We look forward to viewing Sudano’s selection of candles as well as the other items for purchase next Wednesday.

Sprint Offers New Emergency Alert System

Sprint Nextel has enabled a new SMS (short message service – AKA – texting) emergency alert system that the nation’s Tier 1 wireless operators and federal agencies rallied around earlier this year.

This system will allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deliver warning messages to wireless networks from the president of the United States, the National Weather Service and state and local emergency operations centers.  Amber Alert messages for missing children will be sent out as well as any alerts issued by President Obama.

This new network came to light in May when FEMA and the FCC announced the news system which will first launch in New York and Washington D.C.

Phone devices will be enabled with special chip sets and software and the warnings are sent to customers based on their current location.  Only users within the affected areas will be alerted and subscribers can opt out of alerts (except for those sent by the president).

Sprint is conducting a testing of the system later in the year.

With over a dozen Sprint devices currently supporting the service, do you think this will be a beneficial service to you?  Let us know your thoughts/comments below.
