Solar Powered White House

Jimmy Carter originally installed solar panels on the White House in 1979 as more of a political gesture and they were removed by the Regan Administration shortly after Regan took office at what some believe to be a symbolic statement against renewable energy.  Early solar technology required up to 10 years to see a return on investment and it is unlikely that the first solar panels on the White House ever paid for themselves.

According to this old GovPro trade journal article; in 2003 then president George W. Bush installed solar panels on the white house to power some property maintenance building and heat the White House pool. Well actually the National Parks Services made the call. The National Park Service has had success using solar energy to meet energy needs in remote areas in several National Parks for years and have witnessed and the entire investment cycle to safely assess ROI of many solar energy systems.

Additionally the White House  has added solar panels during the Obama Administration both as an energy savings measure and political statement. Obama, who has been promoting renewable energy throughout his presidency.  According to USA Today the White House installed more panels in 2010 in an effort to inspire the Country to invest more in solar technologies.  It is said these panels should already be delivering savings.

It would be nice to know some statistics on the effectiveness of systems installed under President Bush now that nearly 10 years have passed as well as the new systems installed by Obama.

New Standards of Etiquette for Technology?

It’s inevitable.  You have just arrived home from a long day at work.  Sitting down to eat dinner with your family is one of the few times in the week where you actually get to communicate.  However, another type of communication is slowly taking over —- technology.

It’s a matter of time before your cell phone begins to ring with notifications.  A cultural change is coming into play with the recent explosion of mobile and collaboration technologies.  This has brought up the million dollar question, “Are people becoming more rude as technology expands?”

Most experts are saying YES.

“Rudeness and bad manners – and books about them – are on the rise.  Technology clearly has much to do with this,” writes Debra Olliver in “Forget Etiquette.  What Happened to Modern Manners?” in the Huffington Post.  “Even ‘smart’ technology has made many of us seem ‘less smart.’  It’s certainly made people more distracted and self-centered, both of which breed bad manners.  Invading people’s personal spaces by talking loudly on cell-phones, answering cell phones or texts during a meal, and being an anonymous Internet bully are just a few familiar examples of manners gone awry.”

At the 2011 Enterprise Connect trade show, several professionals were interviewed on whether or not they saw a need to create a standard for etiquette while using technology.

Check it out here.

Do you think we need standards of etiquette for new technology?  Let us know YOUR thoughts below!

Creating Energy in Virginia

There have been many recent questions regarding Dominion Virginia Power and their commitment to renewable energy.  While Dominion’s print ads feature wind turbines and fresh sea grass blowing in the air, it appears that Dominion’s customers in Virginia are getting precisely zero wind power.  A little suspicious?  Or is it simply a lack of knowledge and understanding of the electric grid and how it works?

A recent article written in rebuttal to the allegations states that renewable energy is and will continue to be an important element of Dominion’s plan to meet the customers needs.

The article states that Dominion Virginia Power has a broad array of renewable facilities in operation, under construction, or in development.  While it may appear to be a relatively small portion of generating capacity, these renewable projects have the potential to power more than 400,000 homes.

Dominion also proposed a program to place solar panels on commercial and government buildings in high demand areas in Northern Virginia.

The article also states that Dominion’s West Virginia wind farm does flow to consumers in Northern Virginia and beyond.  Dominion Virginia Power worked hard to build a wind farm in Tazewell County.  Ironically, it was blocked by opposition that cited environmental concerns among its objections.

Also noteworthy, Dominion Virginia Power’s generation projects will produce 14,200 construction related jobs and $3.3 billion in economic activity for the commonwealth.

The result of Dominion’s investments has resulted in the lowest electricity rates in the Washington metro area, reliable electric service,  and jobs and tax revenue for VA.

What are your thoughts on Dominion’s actions and investments?  Please leave opinions and comments below.

Can You Outsmart a Text Message?

How would you like to send all the texts you want without paying for them?  I’m about to tell you how by using SMS (short-message-service) gateways.  These are back-doors that transform other types of communication, such as email and instant messages, into text messages.

With text messages costing roughly 20 cents each, some are using this method to bring their bills down.

All major mobile phone carriers have email address that feed into your SMS box (see list below for specific addresses/carriers).  If you have a smart phone and an unlimited data plan, you can use your phone’s email client to send as many texts as you want with no additional cost.  All you need to know is what cellular provider your most texted contacts have.  With this information, you can program the proper email address next to their names in your phone’s address book.

  • Sprint:  phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
  • Verizon:  phonenumber@vtext.com
  • T-Mobile:  phonenumber@tmomail.net
  • AT&T:  phonenumber@txt.att.net
  • AIM:  +1phonenumber

Of course, you still have to pay if you receive a text message from another sender.  If somebody replies to text message you sent as an email, his/her reply will come to you in the format in which you originally sent it.  ie. – It won’t cost you a thing!

Some may argue that the savings are nominal, but I am firm believer that every penny counts!

Turning Trash to Treasure

The days of tall trash “mountains” sitting at landfills encased in liners is slowly fading.  During the past two decades, many changes have been made to landfills – operators are trying to turn trash into gold instead of burying it.

Landfills are becoming more modernized.  Plastic, cardboard, metal, and the methane gas landfills create are all valuables and landfills are figuring out new ways to mine them.  They’re experimenting with everything from turning garbage into pellets to replace coal in coal-fired power plants to recovering crude oil from plastic bottles.

With trash becoming a source of fuel, Waste Management is opening 2 waste-to-energy plants.  Methane gas the landfill produces is used to turn turbines to make electricity. Waste Management currently is working on 141 landfill gas projects.  Of those projects, four provide power directly to industrial plants, and another provides landfill gas to Zeeland Farms to help dry its soybeans.

Trash decomposes and creates methane – making its reliability 95%.  The total amount of trash ending up at landfills has been shrinking.

Last year, 46 million cubic yards arrived at landfills – which was a drop of 28% from 2005.  With much effort on saving/recycling energy, these numbers are expected to further decrease.

Holiday Activities Take Over ERC!

With the holidays very near, the employees of Eric Ryan Corporation got to add a little extra fun to their workdays!

In the beginning of December, each team from every department was put to the challenge by decorating their supervisors’ and managers’ door.  Names of various holiday themed songs were placed in a hat and teams were asked to draw a song at random.  The doors were then decorated based off of that theme.

“I think the door decorating was a really great activity to get employees working together on a creative project,” said Josh Genova, Assistant Project Manager.  “My department decorated with the theme ‘Let It Snow’ and made a big snowman out of cottonballs.  We also hung some lights and snowflakes falling from the sky.”
